At MacBackpackers, we believe travel should have a positive impact on the places, people, and communities we visit. Scotland’s landscapes are at the heart of what we do, and we are committed to operating responsibly while helping preserve them for future travellers.

MacBackpackers is a member of the Green Tourism Scheme and has been awarded Bronze status in recognition of our commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

Our Vehicles & Operations

 

We continuously work to reduce the environmental impact of our tours through investment in cleaner, more efficient operations.

 

Our fleet:

​

  • Meets modern Euro 6 emissions standards

  • Is regularly maintained for maximum fuel efficiency

  • Operates with real-time telematics and performance monitoring

  • Is replaced on an ongoing cycle to maintain environmental performance

  • Has achieved EcoStars recognition for sustainable fleet management

 

By travelling together in small groups, our tours also help reduce the number of individual vehicles travelling through remote Highland communities and rural roads.

 

 

 

Reducing Waste

 

We actively work to minimise waste across our tours, hostels, and office operations.

This includes:

  • Recycling waste collected during tours wherever possible

  • Reducing unnecessary paper use

  • Encouraging digital booking confirmations and tickets

  • Minimising single-use plastics

  • Promoting reusable water bottles and responsible travel habits

 

We encourage all guests to help us protect Scotland’s environment by following a simple principle:

 

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.

 

 

 

Supporting Responsible Tourism

 

We believe tourism should benefit local communities as well as visitors.

 

Where possible, we:

  • Work with locally owned hostels and businesses

  • Support rural Highland economies

  • Encourage guests to shop local and support independent businesses

  • Promote responsible behaviour in natural and historic environments

 

Our tours regularly visit fragile rural and coastal locations, and our driver-guides actively encourage respectful, low-impact travel practices throughout each trip.

 

 

 

Woodland Restoration

 

As part of our long-term environmental commitment, MacBackpackers owns approximately 100 hectares of woodland in the Scottish Highlands.

 

This land is being replanted with 100% native Scottish tree species to support biodiversity, native habitat restoration, and long-term carbon reduction efforts.

 

 

 

Energy & Resource Use

 

Across our operations, we continue to review ways to reduce energy and resource consumption, including:

  • Improving energy efficiency

  • Reducing water usage

  • Increasing recycling rates

  • Reviewing suppliers and operational practices

  • Encouraging environmentally responsible behaviour among staff and guests
